Are You the Rotten Potato?
Years ago I heard a message at church that stuck with me in a surprising way.
The pastor was talking about potato farmers.
He explained that when potatoes are stored, the temperature has to stay just right. If one potato begins to overheat and rot, it doesn’t just affect itself — it can spread and spoil the entire batch.
One rotten potato can ruin the whole crop.
That image has never really left me.
Because the truth is, the same thing can happen in our lives.
Not with potatoes.
With people.
What Are You Bringing Into the Room?
Everywhere we go, we bring something with us.
Our attitude.
Our words.
Our reactions.
Our spirit.
When you walk into a room, what do people feel?
Peace?
Encouragement?
Kindness?
Or tension, criticism, and negativity?
It’s an uncomfortable question, but it’s an important one.
Because whether we realize it or not, what we carry spills onto the people around us.
Scripture reminds us of this in Proverbs:
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” — Proverbs 15:1
Our words and responses have the power to either calm a situation or inflame it.
To build people up… or slowly tear them down.
You May Be the Only Jesus Someone Sees
There’s another thought that has stayed with me over the years.
Sometimes you may be the only glimpse of Jesus someone experiences.
Not because you’re perfect.
But because people are watching.
They watch how you respond when you're frustrated.
They watch how you treat people who can do nothing for you.
They watch how you carry yourself when life is hard.
And let’s be honest… it always seems like the moment someone is watching is the day we’re having a bad one.
Bad days happen.
We all have them.
But even on those days, we still have a choice in how we show up.
Don’t Spread the Rot
Life is hard enough already.
The world doesn’t need more bitterness, more anger, or more harshness spreading from person to person.
Instead, we have the opportunity to bring something different.
Hope.
Grace.
Encouragement.
Patience.
Galatians 5 reminds us what should grow in the life of someone walking with Christ:
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” — Galatians 5:22–23
That kind of fruit changes the atmosphere of every room we walk into.
It lifts people.
It points them back to Jesus.
A Simple Question to Ask Yourself
At the end of the day, this is the question I still come back to:
Am I helping people grow… or am I spreading rot?
Am I bringing life into the spaces I enter?
Or am I allowing frustration, negativity, or bitterness to spill out onto others?
None of us get it right every day.
But we can choose, again and again, to let Christ shape how we respond to the people around us.
Because the truth is…
One life filled with hope can impact an entire room.
And one person walking closely with Jesus can change far more than they realize.
Reflection Question
What do the people around you experience most often from you — encouragement or discouragement?
What would it look like this week to intentionally bring life, hope, and kindness into the rooms you walk into?
The people crossing your path today may already be carrying heavy burdens.
Your words might be the thing that lifts them… or the thing that weighs them down even more.
That’s why Scripture reminds us:
“Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”— Ephesians 4:29
So today, choose your words carefully.
Choose encouragement. Choose kindness. Choose life.
Because you never know who is watching, who is listening, or who might need the hope you carry.
Don’t be the potato that spreads the rot.
Be the one that helps the whole room grow.
